Hi my name is Niklas Gerhardsson and I am the owner
and founder of Svalbard Huskies. When I first arrived to Svalbard back
in 1997 I was amazed of the grandness of the untouched nature and the
rugged environment. It was and is very different from the southern
town of Halmstad in Sweden where I am originally from.
I had just finished my two years university course in Sweden to
become a certified nature guide when I was offered a placement on
Svalbard as a dog tour guide. This was right up my alley as I trained
rescue dogs and competed in obedience (for dogs). After a couple of
years I felt that I had so many ideas for improvement but no way to
implement them in the firm I worked for. I now decided to start my own
guide firm and Svalbard Huskies was founded in 2001.
I started out with just enough dogs to run two dog sleds at each
tour. Since then Svalbard Huskies has experienced an enormous growth
and become one of the most well known and highest respected tour guide
operator in Svalbard. Our peak season is between Januari and May.
Some of our employees are native born citizens and some are
certified tour guides. Because of the extreme climate on the island it
is of utmost importance that tour guides are well educated and has a
well documented experience of guiding in this extreme part of the
world. Therefore there are restraints and rigorous regulations as to
whom can call himself/herself guide in svalbard. Because of this
Svalbard has its own guide certificates and one must pass this special
education in order to call himself/herself an authorised svalbard
guide. The education is divided into several certificates and I have
the full authorisation, including winterguide certificate and summer
certificate.
Our goal is to give our customers the most memorable experience of
their life and our aim is to have the highest tour quality and safety
in Svalbard. Don't hesitate to contact us if you have any questions
about our services.
